Medical Marijuana Tinctures

Making your own tinctures can be incredibly effective and fun way to medicate. Tinctures are typically made by adding kief, hash, or extremely dry, ground buds to alcohol. It can be placed in small, discreet spray bottles for patients to use “on the go.” While it may be made with any of the above mentioned medications, kief usually provides optimum results.

Ingredients:

  • Everclear or other high-proof alcohol (minimum of 90 proof)
  • Kief (1.25 grams for every fluid ounce)
  • Glass jar
  • 2 cheesecloth sheets
  • 2 coffee filters
  • Gloves
  • Directions:

Keep both your alcohol and kief as cold as possible (preferably in your freezer or in a sealed bag in a dry ice bath). Place both the cold kief and Everclear in a glass jar and shake it up vigorously for 5 to 7 minutes. After you have done this, return the jar to the freezer. Every 2 hours or so repeat this process for 72 hours (it’s okay if you don’t do it exactly every two hours). After the 3 days is up you can take the mixture out of the freezer and strain it through two layers of clean cheesecloth. Squeeze out the cheesecloth and save the remaining ball for effective topical use. The liquid that was collected by straining through the cheesecloth should then be filtered 2 times through a single paper coffee filter. While your are conducting this part of the process, be sure to wear gloves. If a clear liquor is used, the mixture should appear as a golden-green color. For those patients who are particularly sensitive to alcohol tastes, extremely sparse amounts of flavoring may be added, such as lemon, cherry, vanilla or banana. Lastly, add this mixture to a small, sterile spray bottle, food-coloring dropper, et cetera.

Tincture can be some of the funniest things you'll try that are marijuana infused. Most tinctures come with some kind of alcohol mixed in, but I've tried the honey and agave base, and I can't say I'm disappointed. They come in small bottle that have droplets, and usually two drops will do for a solid dose. The taste is eerily similar to honey and just makes you keep wanting to medicate. The high it gives off is much more of a mellowing feel, with little head affects coming from this calming substance. Tinctures are definitely something to check out just for the taste, if not just for the calming medicated feeling you get after.

This is not really the thing for everyone, but in the event you are at a pain level that you extremely instant relief. Then I say go for it, just a drop or two and you will be a new person. The one I use has a honey like flavor, which I love honey so there you go. But if I am in such a state that I can't wait for the usual hits to take care of me, just a couple of drops and I'm in a whole new place.

I tried using a cannabis tincture that was supposed to help with sleep disorders. It worked somewhat but didn't keep me out all night as I had been told it would. I have not slept well for many years and was hoping to use this as a sleep remedy. It did get me very relaxed and made me sleepy. I'd like to try the recipe here and then share my experience. I like having access to all of the menus here, very cool!

I have an increasingly hard time finding dispensaries that carry tinctures. I really like how easy it is to add to drinks, a lot of the time I just sneak some into my orange juice when it is necessary to be discreet. The last version I got was a mixture of hash oil and alcohol, it was not too appetizing on its own. Then I started adding it to small amounts of juice or tea and I was really pleased how well the taste was masked. I think tinctures are perfect for someone who is on the go or needs to be secretive about medicating.

I personally feel that tincture is the easiest and quickest way to get medicated. I find myself sick often from my lack of immune system from having lupus and I find that this is easy to use. You don't have to eat an entire edible if you are feeling nauseous, and if your throat/lungs aren't feeling well you can just drip some into a drink and feel better within a reasonable amount of time. Tinctures obviously don't have the immediate effects that inhaling smoke will give you but the multiple benefits that tinctures can provide you really outweigh the fact you don't feel medicated extremely quick. I personally recommend tincture to absolutely anyone that feels it could help them, there is no downfall to this form of medicine.

I just started using these, if you can get past the first taste you will love the extremely fuzzy feeling that starts in your mouth and slowly takes over your whole body. It is wonderful for pain. An A plus rating from me. I keep a bottle by the bed for late night pain.

I have a wonder I just wondered. If a tincture can be made with a Vegetable Glycerin base, and electronic cigarettes use a VG base (or a propylene glycol, but VG works too), does that mean that a VG tincture could be put in an e cig cartridge and vaporized that way?

80 proof schnapps works really well after a week of sitting in the freezer. A definite improvement over everclear in flavour, though it can be a bit much. suggested flavours: cinnamon any fruit (whichever you prefer) or anything that is not peppermint as the flavour constitutes itself as a Listerine flavoured abomination. perfect for tastefully relieving nausea without a nausea inducing flavour.

To activate the THC and convert it to a useable THC-A, cannabis products need to be heated to 140-160 degrees Fahrenheit.

It is true that you don’t have to heat it to extract both THC and THCA, but the amount of THC in whole plant preparations is relatively small compared to after decarboxylation of the THCA. So if you want to maximize the strength of your tincture you must heat the cannabis prior to extraction.

heat is not the only way of activating the thc molecule for absorption, dissolving in alcohol also makes it readily available, and growing cannabis for 20 yrs does not automatically make you an expert at the processes of chemistry

Glycerine - food grade - Amazon or health food store. NO alcohol burn. Everclear is HARSH and not to many people's liking no matter how you try to flavor it. Glycerine extract simple - hash, bud etc strength up to you but I use an ounce of prime bud per quart of glycerine. Tastes like honey - thick and syrupy and hits quick. Pain is gone. Keep the crushed bud (no heat required) in the bottle for a week rotating the bottle to distribute thc - and keep in a dark tinted bottle and out of the sun for storage. Lasts a long time. I put smaller amounts in easy to carry dark eye dropper bottles. As for e-cig vaping - there is a version of an ecig that vaps weed. Expensive toy worthless IMHO since the vap has to be refreshed almost after one hit. Keep in mind ecigs were made to deliver nicotine and that is waay more concentrated to hit than tinct or honeybee added to the ecig. There are a lot of fine battery operated pocket sized vap machines made just for weed. Stick to what works.

The only reason to heat your product is that thc is fat/oil soluble, first and foremost. Plus, any temp above 300deg Farenheit breaks down the THC on a molecular level.

I'd like to avoid smelling up the house with the heating process. So how about, after using alcohol to extract THC and THC-A from unheated plant material, then filter and use small amounts in cooking (at less than 300 degrees) or hot drinks? Will this work as well, to convert THC-A into THC? Are there other ways to do the conversion of THC-A into THC without heat? Any simple chemical process?

To answer my own question, I found this at http://www.cannabisculture.com/articles/2794.html :   Quote: I manufacture cannabis-medicated drinks for the collectives...my method of decarboxylation is performed in a dehydrator which does NOT have a fan. Ed is absolutely correct...it does not reach the 106 temp; however, he also mentioned that temperature is where RAPID decarb'ing happens. You want a "low and slow" method in the dehydrator for absolutely BEST results. From that point, it is EASY to pull a nice alcohol or glycerin extraction of the product which has already converted into active THC. If you do this properly, the product will be ready to consume WITHOUT the need for further heat or specialized heat extractions.

The best way for this process to work ,take your bud 1oz to 8 oz of glycerin grind your bud and place it in a mason jar put the glycerin in with it cap and seal it.fill a crock pot with water and place the mason jar in on medium. let it sit in the water for 2-3 days shaking the mixture every 4 hours or so.the water will evaporate over time so you need to replace it.you need to make sure that the water never boils as this will kill the levels of thc and give your end product a burnt taste.after the 2-3 days simply pull the jar out strain your material out and BANG there you go .if you want you can buy all natural food flavoring at health food stores to add to it mint and orange seem to be 2 good flavors.

190 proof pure grain alcohol 1 gallon, 1 pound OG Kush potent bud clippings makes a half gallon of tincture. The 190 proof pure grain alcohol does and will activates and devolves the THC from the plant matter. I soaked them a week but only a day is truly needed. Strain in cheese cloth and store in a dark glass bottle in the freezer. Some people need only a few drops, others a couple of I droppers full. I had a friend miss understand and had a half of a ounce of tincture and was high for two days.

I bought a vg tincture from a local dispensary. Called "kinetic tinctures". I've tried just swallowing it as the bud tender told me to (though she did not seem so knowledgable on the topic), and holding it under my tongue for 15-20 minutes. I've tried up to three droppers full (swallowed). I was definitely relaxed but not as medicated as I'd hoped! Am I ingesting improperly? Weak tincture or high tolerance?

I have made a lot of tinctures & usually make a fairly large batch at a time. Depending on what I have on hand, I might make a tincture of just one kind of grass, or I might make a blend of bag-ends. It is also fun to use previous tinctures to add some extra oomph to a new mixture. I use 500ml of overproof rum & between 20 & 30 g of good buds &/or hash. For a tincture high in THC, it is essential to decarb the finely ground weed. I preheat the oven to 300F, put the weed in — all spread out on a tray — then turn off the oven. Remove after a few minutes or if you notice the material starting to steam. For alcohol, I usually use 151-proof rum. There is no need to let the mixture soak for more than a day as the THC is dissolved off the pot pretty quickly & further soaking just releases chlorophyl & other nasty plant chemicals. Strain the resulting liquid a couple of times. For those who find 75% alcohol a bit harsh (& it is), I evaporate much of it away by putting the tincture in a Pyrex measuring cup carefully submersed to near the top edge in boiling water. The hot water must be replaced every 20 or 30 minutes & evaporation is a slow, steady process, but after a couple of hours 500ml of high-alcohol tincture will have become 200ml of THC-rich, low-alcohol magic.

Chinga, there is little THC left in the weed after the alcohol extraction, but I find that a very good tea can be made by tying up the wad of spent material in the tincture-soaked (& squeezed out) cheesecloth, then boiling it in a pot with a couple of cups of milk (careful not to overheat the milk). BTW, if you use skim milk to make the tea, throw in a dab of butter or oil. You can't make TeaHC without some sort of fat in the milk or water.

Further to my lengthy post two spots above this one: when evaporating the 151-proof tincture, I use freshly boiled water, but not a double-boiler. DO NOT heat tincture on the stove. Open flame is very dangerous around alcohol vapour. There is no good reason to heat the tincture above the temperature of boiling water. Too hot & the THC will be lost. Be patient & replace the hot water often. The alcohol will evaporate, leaving the THC & other cannabinoids safely in a more concentrated tincture. Afterwards, I might flavour it with a bit of vanilla, cinnamon, brown sugar, even coffee. But a couple of squirts plain in a glass of ice water is very refreshing. You can pick up small dark-glass bottles with droppers at a pharmacy. Doesn't need to be kept in the freezer (I don't understand any of this freezer stuff... I just make it at room temperature... this ain't hash we're trying to make here). The alcohol helps preserve the state of the tincture; should last years if kept airtight & out of strong light.

By the way, since there is some confusion on this, Cannabis in its natural plant state produces THC-A (tetrahydracannabanolic acid). This is not very psychoactive. You have to decarboxylate the THC-A to make it into THC, which is very psychoactive. Curing cannabis for long periods of time will decarb it, smoking it or heating it in the oven will also. So yes, if you have somewhat fresh Cannabis you will need to heat it to active the THC-A.

Hi fellow smokers! A few days ago, I used 2 grams of high grade marijuana(grinded up) in an attempt to bring about my first marijuana tincture, but I think I've made a few mistakes and I wanted to know if there is anything I could do to correct them. My Steps: -I Grind up 2 grams of MJ and mix in 3times the amount of everclear(vodka) 190% proof -The mixture is kept in a glass jar with a cap, and its stored in the freezer 24/7 except for when I take it out to shake it. My questions: 1)I did not preheat the herbs, and one of the 2 strains that I used were very sticky, should I be worried about the potency of my tincture? 2)I did not measure the ratio of MJ to Vodka, instead i just pour in 3x the amount of vodka to my MJ, so should I pour some out? 3)Finally, how many days do I need to keep it in the freezer for the extraction of THC to be complete?

Hi folks! Am myself trying tinctures for my partner and me, who can no longer vaporize or smoke. FYI, unfortunately, the commercial products around here don't really seem to work [at all] for us. We tried PowerBlend 4x [at its regular dose; and doubling it, then tripling it, holding sublingually for min 2 minutes]; 20X liquid thc [again, at its regular does, and doubling, and tripling at >2 min], and finally the 50X one shot [same deal, held at >2 min in mouth, at best a mild effect for only a few minutes]. One non-tincture method does work [dr roberts chocolate trip cookies] but it's very high cost [$15/cookie] and we need 2-3 a day. So 2 questions: 1. anyone have consistent luck with a commercial brand of tincture we can try? we are in california. 2. we are trying to make our own. However, we only have shake. We put one oz [alas, we did not decarb, didn't know to do that] of greencrack shake in ~1 cup of 151 proof everclear. do we need additional time [beyond the 5 day rec freeze/shake/repeat] because we didn't decarb our shake? thanks in advance if anyone has insights. MJ is the only thing that addresses our needs [we hate pills and morphine derivatives].

For a commercial tinture, have you tried DutchFarmsOrganics .com, she is from the Netherlands. Has a good product. Also, some dispensaries here are carrying a coconut based tincture-lighter texture, faster absorbtion.Peace
