Mad Cow Disease
In recent years, more and more research and studies have been conducted as to the possible benefits of marijuana. While I'm sure that none of us (besides the federal government) can argue that marijuana has no medicinal properties, I'm sure you didn't know that a steady diet of cannabis actually helps prevent Mad Cow Disease.
The Journal of Neuroscience reports that studies have shown that those who ingest cannabis strains which are high in the non-psychoactive cannabinoid compound known as CBD are far less likely to contract bovine spongiform encephalopathy, commonly feared as Mad Cow Disease. MCD is a severe, deadly and chronic disease. Mad Cow Disease works by accumulating infectious particles in the brains of both humans and animals and uses what are called prions to deteriorate the brain.
Recent research has shown that while there is still no cure for Mad Cow Disease - including marijuana - cannabidiol (CBD) actually works by blocking these prions from entering the brain in the first place, thus far reducing the chance of the marijuana user contracting this terrible disease.
After hearing this research, French scientists at the National Center for Scientific Research confirmed these results by stating, “Our results suggest that CBD may protect neurons against the multiple molecular and cellular factors involved in the different steps of the neurodegenerative process, which takes place during prion infection. When combined with its ability to target the brain and its lack of toxic side effects, CBD may represent a promising new anti-prion drug.”
Additionally, not only does CBD protect brain neurons against these infectious prions, but it also protects neurons against all types of damage, including that received from alcohol. Yet still after multiple results such as these confirm medical benefits of the drug, the United States government still steadfastly refuses to reclassify marijuana from a Schedule I drug.
This information is not to say the you are 100% guaranteed from getting Mad Cow Disease if you smoke medical marijuana, but it definitely wouldn’t hurt to pick up some high CBD strains like Harlequin now and then.
