History of 420

We all know that when the time is 4:20 or the day is April 20 (4/20) it is a cause for celebration, by lighting up that joint, bong, pipe, vape, or what have you. Few marijuana users – even truly experienced ones – know the true meaning of those three magical numbers: 4-2-0. In 1971 a group of high school boys at San Rafael High School learned about a guerilla marijuana crop that was just about ready for harvest. The grower had been put in jail on an unrelated charge and the group saw this as their opportunity to “come up big.” They decided to meet at a statue on campus, after school, known as the Louis Pasteur Statue. They planned to meet their at 4:20 pm, saying “4:20 Louis” to each other as code for where to meet. At the statue they hatched their plan to locate the crop. The group of teenagers failed at locating the crop multiple times and eventually shortened the code to “420” because they all knew where to meet by then. This soon caught on at the school once they told some friends and the term soon became known at the school as the time to smoke weed. This caught on in the Bay Area from San Rafael High School and soon became renowned nationwide and worldwide.
