Cannabis Butter

There are two ways to make your butter. One way is to boil water and then add the butter and Cannabis. The alternative way is to simply very slowly and gingerly melt the butter and then add the Cannabis. Either way has been proven to be extremely effective, however if it is your first time, or if you are somewhat inexperienced in a kitchen setting, you may want to use the water method so you donít burn the product and therefore waste time and money. Using the water method generally takes anywhere from 18 - 22 hours, whereas making it simply with butter and water takes 3 to 4 hours.

The Water Method

Boil 2 cups of water for every pound of butter you intend to use. Generally, you will want to use between 1 and 4 ounces of finely ground bud (potency of the butter not only depends on the amount of bud you use but the quality as well) for every pound of butter. You can also use trimmings from your harvest, but you may want to increase the ratio, as it is obviously not as potent as buds. Once you boil the water, add your butter and turn down the heat to medium-low. When the butter completely melts, it should start simmering (not boiling, but more of a slow simmer-gurgle). Once this happens, add your finely ground Cannabis to the mix and turn the heat down to low. You may want to give it one initial stir, just to mix the plant matter into the liquid. Cover and let cook for between 18 and 22 hours, checking on it every few hours to ensure the heat does not get too hot. The mixture should again be slowly gurgling bubbles, but not boiling. It doesnít hurt to add a few splashes of water over the course of the 18 plus hours, as some of the water may evaporate. After around 20 hours it should be safe to remove from the heat. When you do this, allow it to sit for a minute or two. Strain the mixture into a Tupperware container, using a cheesecloth or coffee filter to remove any bits of plant matter from going into the container. Cover and place in the refrigerator overnight to solidify.

The next day, the butter should have hardened to a hard chunk of solid butter on top of water. Remove the butter and pat it dry with a clean cloth or paper towel. If there is brown sludge attached to where the butter touched the water remove this by scraping it off with a knife or spoon. Your CannaButter is now ready to cook with or simply spread on toast. For optimum results, store in the freezer until ready to use and do not reheat. It may also be store in the refrigerator, although will only keep for 2 weeks or so.

No Water Method

The other way to make Cannabis-infused butter is without water. This method takes a lot less time (3 to 4 hours) but must be done very delicately as the butter can burn easily, thus wasting your precious medication. Place a pot on the burner and turn the heat up to low-medium (about 9 oíclock on the dial). Place your butter in the pot and move it around constantly to ensure it does not burn (the same ratio of bud to butter applies to the no water method). When the butter has completely melted it should start slowly gurgling bubbles. Once it does this, add your bud or trimmings. Again, give it an initial stir to mix it all together and then cover and turn down to low. Check on it every 15 minutes or so to make sure it doesnít burn, but donít stir it. After 3 hours of slowly simmering, it should be ready to remove from the heat. Repeat the same steps as the water method from here on. Enjoy!

I am making mine with my next door neighbour's harvest in Johannesburg, South Africa. I use the recipe 2 cups of water to 500g butter (salted or unsalted) and 25g home-grown weed (ground). I boil the water, melt the butter in it, add the weed and take the heat down to simmer it for 30min. Then I put the pot in a cooking bag (no electricity needed)- check out cooking bags at http://www.nb-wonderbag.co.za/Pages/Products. I leave it overnight then warm it up again in the morning until simmering then return it into the cooking bag. In the evening after work - I sieve the weed off; put the liquids in the fridge and leave it overnight. In the morning the butter is ready for use after I chuck the sludgy water away. I then have perfect canni butter that I make butter cookies with; 230g of butter yields around 50 melt-in-your-mouth butter cookies using this recipe http://www.food.com/recipe/worlds-best-butter-cookies-50684. Easy to make and enjoyed by many people. The general reaction is that of extreme happiness and contentment with deep insight to life. Simply humbling.

I've been eating pot butter cookies (choc chip) for about 3 months now and finally got a line on some good trimmings. At this moment I'm making my first batch of butter in a double boiler with water. I wished that I had read farther down and found the crock pot idea before I started. Oh well, theres next time. Can't wait to see how my own cookies turn out. I'll come back with results in a few days.

The butter method really only takes about 30 minutes from boiling down to simmering, IF you are going to cook with it, it gets uP to a high degree again. Works quite well!

I make my cannabutter in a slow cooker on the low setting. I put the trim in a poultry bag and put the butter on top. Then I pour about 1 liter (quart) of hot water over top. I noticed that it was getting to boil, even on low, so I put a few pebbles under the ceramic insert and it's perfect. I leave it for approx 12 hours and the potency is awesome. I use approx 2 oz decarboxylated trim to 2 lbs of butter. I forever have people (even ones that get edibles from a dispensary) that are asking for my baking.

I've been using the water method regularly for about a year, and one thing I've noticed is that I always lose a bit of butter. Starting out with a pound of butter (2 cups), I never end up with more than 1.75c of finished product. I have a feeling that a bit of it gets lost in the water at the end. And I'll echo a previous post that says it's hard to get all the moisture out, and the butter will go bad in the fridge after a few weeks. Mine generally grows spots of black mold, which you can just slice off, but still. I've been making a lot of hard candy so moisture and portions are critical. That being said, I think I'll be throwing in the towel and trying the double-boiler method next. Although I love the idea of the magnetic stir bar! :)

I did mine on a laboratory hot plate with an automatic stirrer (using the no water method). I melted the butter in a pyrex bowl, dumped in the ground bud, and tossed in a magnetic stir bar. Temp control is pretty precise, so once I got the butter to a nice slow bubble I ran it for about 2 hours (it was a pretty small batch), checking about every 15 minutes, because the stirrer tends to push the cannabis out to the sides. Works like a charm, though I'm anxious to try the mason char method from the youtube link in the previous post.

I've made Cannabutter for 3years now and always use the double boiler method (4hour min) each time with great results. One time i tried the the with-water method, after the overnight separation in the fridge, i think there was still some moisture in the butter, and after a week the butter was rancid. Using the DB way, i have stored it in the freezer for over a year, and in the fridge for more than 6 months. Quick tip i found a better way to strain the butter without cheesecloth ( because i wanted to get every bit of the sweet essence, and cheesecloth soaks it up) i found these "earthwise mesh produce bags" for $4, reusable and washable. The quality of trimmings you may get can always be a crap shoot, i have seen some people sell garbage that would never work, i'm a pro trimmer and as part of my pay i keep everything i trim. If you can afford it and your unsure of the trim/ throw in 1 or two good nugs (ground up). I strain it twisting and squeezing while it is still hot to very warm. ( My least favorite part, imagine holding a paper cup full of hot coffee ). Uses; hell everything. i also make Canola oil the same way. in recipes if i want to make sure it works, i add 25% more oil or butter if the recipe can handle it without ruining the integrity. Smell; wonderful, no grassy smell. Taste; I always use unsalted butter i think by itself it has a small tiny hint of sweetness. in dishes or brownies - you know its there defiantly -but no unpleasant aftertaste of nothing other than there was weed in it. i have used expensive butter too, $4+ for half a pound, and yes you get what you pay for but only for special occasions.

I use a type of double boiler method that works great for me. I put 4 sticks of butter into it and place in a boiling pot of water, when butter is melted I add my trimmings (or bud)and shake it up. Place back in pot of water on simmer for 3-4 hours, shaking the jar lightly every 1/2 hour. After the 4 hours is up, I take the lid off, remove the center part and cover with cheesecloth and screw back on the outer ring and drain the butter through to a tupperware tub, squeeze out remaining butter and store. Butter is awesome!

As a recovering opiate addict, sleep comes in fits and nightmare-filled sweats. The ONLY thing that takes away my stomach pain and allows me to sleep is potent cannabutter. It's easy to make once you get the hang of it you'll never waste plant parts again. My wife's ex-husband, when told what we do with our trim, curtly said he burned all his trimmings in a big bonfire. I told him to look me up next year before he does that!

3 to 4 hours is the minimum with any method that doesn't include water. The longer you cook it, the stronger it comes out! I personally use the double boiler method and now currently slow cook mine for 10-12 hours and you don't need expensive bud to use this method. It will slowly extract all of the THC out by cooking for longer periods of time. Mine is always super strong. Another method I have seen on the internet involves using a crock pot/slow cooker. Again this mixture would cook for at least 8-12 hours or overnight and you will get the best results. 15-20 minutes will give you crap compared to what you WOULD get by slow cooking this properly.

For those who don't like the taste and can't work out what recipes to try, I suggest doing savoury shortbreads, adding a couple of other ingredients like chopped herbs (dry or fresh, doesn't matter) such as rosemary, dill, sage, thyme plus ground black pepper and parmesan/reggiano or any other strong hard cheese. I find that the grassy taste of the canna-butter works better in non-sweets. Also, butter is one of the main ingredients in shortbread and so you are getting a more concentrated product, which means your butter can be weaker (cuz you're eating more of it). I can't imagine how chocolate weed brownies ever got so popular. Personally, I think chocolate tastes disgusting with weed (works well with shrooms though) which seems to fight against the flavour, and sugar in general, plus brownie recipes call for very little butter or oil, as compared to cookies. But if you must eat something sweet, then again I direct you to shortbread. It's super easy to make with only 3 ingredients in the very simplest recipes! You can adapt any shortbread recipe, sweet or savoury, just swap the same amount of cannabutter for butter.

JUST MELT A CUP FULL OF UNSALTED BUTTER IN A SMALL STEEL POT (THAT CAN BE PUT IN A OVEN) THEN MELT BUTTER ON STOVE TOP SLOWLY THEN ADD A SMALL HAND FULL OF GROUND CANNABIS THEN PUT INTO PRE-HEATED SET AT 160c DEGREES FOR AROUND 2 HOURS. THEN IT IS PERFECT AND NOT BURNT WITHOUT THE NEED OF WATER.

I use a fondue pot, one stick of butter, ounce of dried ground bud,for 2 hours. A French coffee press squeezes the hot mix and separates the golden green liquid butter. My brownie mix is all I need, just add butter and bake. Tranquility !!!! I really enjoy classical music after a brownie.

I have been using some top quality sour diesel buds ground fine, 1.25 oz per Lb. of butter in a professional crock pot on low for 8 hrs. My tested edible sample was a good .8 mg THC per gram of edible. This butter is stirred many times and monitored with temp probe to keep THC strong. We love to bake and get baked, that's for sure.

I was having one of those day's when smoking was not medicinally effective and I needed an edible. Being frugal, bored and impatient I gathered some shake, a couple grams (no scale) of blue dream and jillybean. I had 1 stick of butter and an electric burner. I melted the butter, very low heat added the herb, mixed and waited for the slightest sign of a simmer and began to stir. Stir for a few minutes and waited again for the slightest simmer and began to stir again. If I saw any sign of smoke I removed from heat and stirred quickly. I did this for 40min. and poured into a tupperware(no straining). HOLY MOLY!! Beautifully medicated within 2 hours. I'll use the slow method for larger amounts+time. This can be done in less time just keep stirring no burning. Thanks for listening, hope it helps.

Cannabutter is awesome because it can be added to almost any recipe and change any food into your medicine. It is great that there are two methods shown here. I think that the water-based method should be used by people who are trying it for the first time because it really is easier to control the temperature and it is less worry. I know that it seems like so much longer, but it is better than potentially burning the whole lot. If you do make butter I would advise to keep it in the freezer. I know that this article says it stays for two weeks in the fridge but I wouldn't risk it; just break off a little chunk when you need some.

Its all about decarboxylating your cannabis. That is making THC psychoactive. This happens when it gets to 220F. By putting water in there, you can control the temperature easier without getting it to 396F when THC boils off. If you can do the all butter method without going over then do it because it is much quicker.

I have only made canna butter with the no water technique, and I have to say it worked quite well many times. Although this is something that's going to take a bit of practice for ya. I would recommend getting a hold of some trimmings or cheap materials for your first few times. It's really easy to burn so make sure you're always watching it, but once you have perfected this technique it will serve you quite well and it the first step to making many edibles.

I have only tried the butter and cannabis technique. I grew 6 plants last year and had tons of trimmings. I used a lot for cooking and trying out new recipes. The cannabutter I made turned out really potent and I used in for many lovely saute dishes along with various fresh herbs. Unless the taste is properly masked I prefer it with main courses rather that desserts.

It allowed me to put the perfect consistency in my recipes to achieve the perfect high and relief I wanted. I do recommend that you use the best bud you can because it is really a waste of time and energy if you use crap to start with. My breads and peanut butter cookies turned out top notch, left everyone wanting more. Maybe I'll share, maybe I won't;)

When I just turned eighteen and my mother left for Europe, my Gucci Hippie auntie came to look after me and help out around the house. We made kief and then used it for the butter. The cookies we made were super potent and the bud was from Humboldt with super frost trichromes. Quality buds is a must, don't use Mexican. When I tried to do it without her guidance, I was reduced to a low budget and sticky typical L.A. mex stress. The cookies taste like shit when you do it that way.

Even after waking up, you'll be lethargic for hours probably dipping back and forth in between waking and sleeping. This is the type of medicine you take to substitute for some more traditional pill form of heavy medication like maybe vicadin or something else.

My Father has told me my whole life about making butter using the water method. He lived in Southern Mexico for a few years in the 60's and he said they would make the better all the time. After the concoction solidified in the fridge they would whip honey and dried fruits into it. Then they could just spread it on some toast and find a comfortable place to pass out. He said this usually ended up being somewhere on the beach, and ended up by waking up with a horrible sunburn. :-)

I tried the butter only method before as an experiment. It is pretty easy to do for couple hours work and I got effective cannabutter that I used right away. The hard part is making a palatable edible with the cannabutter. I used some corn bread baking mix that tasted TERRIBLE with my homemade cannabutter. The upside is I got a 1.5 dose effect with my first attempt. Chocolate products are great for masking a strong cannabis taste and oatmeal is great for texture. The article doesn't mention it, but grinding your dried flowers before you put them in the butter will increase the potency of your cannabutter for sure. And yes, don't burn the butter!
