2011 Medical Cannabis Cup

Earlier this week, High Times held the Medical Cannabis Cup at the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco. Representatives from a wide array of dispensaries and breeders showed up with an assortment of edibles, indicas, sativas, hash and more. The best product was presented by The Incredibowl Industries, introducing the Incredibowl. This revolutionary piece features a glass bowl reinforced with the same high-grade aluminum utilized by the international space station for their meteor shields. It also has an unorthodox carb in which you slide the whole piece forward, generating a huge, clean and fat rip of your quality medical marijuana. Additionally, it features a smoke-injection system designed to give medicate you to the utmost potential. Additionally, the mouthpiece has a screen installed inside which is designed to catch those troublesome “scoobie snacks” of which I’m sure we’ve all experienced the throat-singing pain of catching an ember straight to the back of your throat.
The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes for the best booth at the cannabis cup was awarded to 3 Northern California dispensaries. First place was taken by Magnolia Wellness Center in San Francisco. Second place was awarded to Nor Cal Genetics Seed Collective, while San Jose’s Elemental Wellness took 3rd place.
For those of you who are interested in edibles, some very interesting and obviously potent treats were introduced to this year’s cup. First place was awarded to Greenway Compassionate Relief for their medicated baklava. No one can deny the oh-so-sinful chocolate - whether it’s medicated or not - and Bhang Chocolate took second place with their weed-infused Bhang Chocolate Triple Strength Fire Bar. That just sounds like hibernation in your bedroom for multiple hours waiting to happen. So, on to third place. It was awarded to the Vapor Room for their Om Chocolate Dipped Peanut Butter Truffle.
Another one of the multitude of categories at the cup was for the highest CBD content in a strain. Only first and second prizes were awarded for this one. First place was given to Alaskan Thunder Fuck, tested at 9.23% CBD, from Master Control Unit Collective. Elemental Wellness received an additional award, with a second-place prize in this category for Jamaican Lion, tested at 8.10%.
Florin Wellness Center won the prize for the best non-solvent hash with Herojuana. This essentially means that the category would include bubble hash or any hash that wasn’t made using a solvent such as butane, isopropyl, etc.
1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded for the overall concentrate category (including hash and kief). Phillips Rx took first place by a landslide with their phenomenal Mars OG full-melt hash. The legendary Berkeley Patients Group took second place for their highly medicating Sour Diesel wax, while the Cali Connection Seed Company Collective was given 3rd place for Regulator Kush wax.
And now what I know we’ve all been eager to hear. The strains. The first category was for hybrid strains, including indica-dominant as well as sativa-dominant strains. D & M Compassion Center took first place in the hybrid category for the OG Kush they presented. Buds & Roses presented a Northern California favorite, Star Dawg, and took second place for this indica-dominant hybrid that is a cross of Chem-4 x Tres Dawg. 3rd place was given to Leonard Moore Co-operative for The Pure, a sativa-dominant Skunk variety.
My personal favorite category, the indicas, featured some high-grade strains of which I’m sure we all have come to adore. For first place, the San Jose location of Harborside Health Center won with Boggle Gum. Second place was again taken by a San Jose dispensary, after Elemental Wellness won with their signature strain, True OG. 7 Stars Holistic Healing Center took third place when they had the judges try their own 7 Star Pure Kush.
Now, last but certainly not least, the sativa category. Their were three prizes awarded for this one as well. Ironically, Granddaddy Purple Collective took first place in the sativa category with their Bay 11 strain. Second place was appropriately given to OrganiCann for a truly awesome and long-lasting strain known as Alpha Blue. Happy Lil’ Trees happily took third place for a Northern California favorite, Sonoma Coma.
This information would be good to take into consideration when visiting any of these collectives/cooperatives, although I’m sure they’ll let you know about their award-winning products.
